Wohngeld-Plus Reform 2026 – What Has Changed?

With the Wohngeld-Plus reform, Wohngeld was fundamentally reformed as of January 1, 2025. The reform brought significant improvements for Wohngeld recipients. Here you can learn what has changed and who benefits.

What is Wohngeld-Plus?

Wohngeld-Plus is the name for the reformed Wohngeld that has been in effect since 2025. The reform includes a permanent increase in Wohngeld, an adjustment of the calculation formula, and an expansion of the eligible group of people. The goal is to reach more households and noticeably increase the support.

The Most Important Changes

  • Permanent increase — Wohngeld was increased by an average of approximately €190 per month. The increase is permanent and not time-limited.
  • Heating cost component — A permanent heating cost component was integrated into the calculation to account for increased energy costs.
  • Climate component — A climate component is intended to compensate for the additional burden from CO₂ pricing and promote energy-efficient modernization.
  • Expansion of eligible recipients — Due to the adjustment of income limits, more households are entitled to Wohngeld. According to estimates, approximately 2 million additional households can receive Wohngeld.

Who benefits from Wohngeld-Plus?

The reform benefits both existing Wohngeld recipients whose Wohngeld was automatically recalculated, and new households that are eligible for the first time due to the raised income limits. Households with low and middle incomes, pensioners with small pensions, and families with children in particular receive more support through the reform.

Duration and Approval

The Wohngeld-Plus regulations are permanently anchored in the Wohngeld Act. Wohngeld is generally granted for 12 months. After the approval period expires, a new application must be submitted. Changes in income or household size must be reported to the Wohngeld authority immediately.
